Kayak Guide Training Courses

Guiding people to new places in an Ocean environment is an exciting and rewarding challenge. To take people into a world that they would not explore on their own and to do this safely takes not only sound Sea Kayaking Skills, but also a sound understanding of your environment, the people under your care, a healthy dose of good judgment and Patience.

The Australian Canoeing Coastal Guide (Sit On Top) rating is the standard required for beginning your career as a Sea Kayak Guide. Whether you are already in the Sea Kayaking Industry or looking to develop and progress your skills in this field this course will ensure you meet the standards required by Permitting Bodies and Industry Regulators alike.

The Go Sea Kayak - Australian Canoeing Coastal Guide (Sit On Top) Award is designed to give you the training you need to be able to assess the risks involved in an activity, to conduct a program accordingly, and to provide clients under your guidance with the necessary information they need to have a fun and exhilarating day on the water.

The Award covers certain units of the TAFE Outdoor Recreation Certificate IV qualification, VET (Vocational Education and Training Scheme) which through Statement of attainment is Nationally recognised.

Candidates will be trained and assessed and upon successful completion, attain the Australian Canoeing Coastal Guide (Sit On Top) Award. This Nationally Recognised Award enables the holder to Guide groups of novices on activity based programs on Sit On Top sea kayaks at sea defined as outside of estuaries, embayment’s or other sheltering reefs or islands in moderate conditions as listed below:

Below “strong wind warnings” conditions (forecast or observed of greater than 22 knots)  

Assessed in minimum winds of 11–16 knots

 Areas of exposed coastline that is simple, not involving overfalls, tidal races, difficult landings or open crossings may be included

 Crossings of less than 10 nautical miles  

Breaking (overtopping) waves (sea) up to 1 m  

Surf to 1 m.

Operations may also be conducted in conditions that exceed the above where a documented hazard identification and risk management process has been undertaken to ensure the participants skills and equipment are appropriate to the environment.

We have programs running each month that will get you ready to tackle jobs in the Outdoor Adventure Industry with on the job practical training and experience.

There are two courses available. One for guides with previous experience of minimum 15 tours over the last two years and one course for beginning Guides with no evidence of tours in the last two years.

Kayak Guide Course Details:

1) Guides with Previous Experience (as evidenced by log books, minimum 15 tours as a Sea Kayak Guide)

You will also be assigned a Mentor from Go Sea Kayak if enrolled in this course to work with you through your practical tours

2) Guides with no previous Experience

12 Tours with a Commercial Tour group in three phases , Observation, Assisting a Tour Leader and Tour Leading.
